Day of the Dover pt. 4 - Soldier's Home Tunnel/Snargate Tunnels East/Historex Tunnels - October 2013

These tunnels have had multiple names over the years, so I've stuck three in the title. This one was sort of accidental really. We parked up on Snargate Street and were originally going to attempt Oil Mills Upper/Lower, but Altair didn't fancy the scramble with his back still being an issue. I remembered that what I thought were D.o.E. tunnels were just down the road, and after a quick scout and linger waiting for pedestrians to clear off we made our way in. I was a bit confused as I seemed to remember that D.o.E. looked bigger, and it turns out that we actually went in Solider's Home tunnels.

Day of the Dover pt. 3. - Drop Redoubt Open Day - October 2013

I'll fess up now - this one is cheating. Somehow I've always managed to miss the Drop Redoubt open days that the Western Heights Preservation Society put on once or twice a year. However, as sheer luck would have it as we walked from turning down North Entrance to check on St Martin's it turned out that all of those gunshots that we could hear weren't the backdrop of Dover, but rather from re-enactments at one of the elusive openings. Whilst the others had come a way to see Dover, and this would involve a slightly different experience, it seemed silly to turn down the opportunity as I'd been meaning to go to one for quite some time.

Not my picture, but a good external for the scale of the place.

Day of the Dover pt. 2 - Detached Bastion, Western Heights, Dover - October 2013

After a couple of deep shelters, it was time for a bit of variety. I'd heard on the grapevine about six weeks ago that something that I was missing from my Western Heights collection had opened up. Having previously been to Western Heights several times with varying levels of success it always seemed to be Detached Bastion that eluded me, having been sealed in a grand way shortly before I started my exploring career.

Day of the Dover pt. 1 - Z Rocket and South Foreland 1 Deep Shelter - October 2013

Here we have it then, my long-awaited return to my own blog! After not blogging for some time (see here for explanation) today provided me with the chance to get back down to Dover and do some good ol' fashioned non-non-public deep shelters. After Altair had said at the last 28 meet about wanting to get down to Dover for some sites I offered to show him around if we could agree on a date. Two months later, and we finally did!

Visited with Altair and a non-member.
